Optimus Transitions from Laboratory Prototype to Factory Worker
Tesla has officially deployed dozens of Optimus Gen 3 humanoid robots into active pilot operations at Gigafactory Texas. Unlike traditional industrial robotic arms constrained to fixed cages and hardcoded gantry kinematics, Optimus navigates factory aisles dynamically, sorting battery cells and moving heavy components.
End-to-End Neural Policy Network
Optimus runs on the same unified neural network architecture that powers Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD). Video streams from onboard cameras feed directly into a transformer backbone, outputting joint torques at 200 Hz. There is no intermediate C++ trajectory planning layer; the robot learns manipulation directly through imitation and reinforcement learning in simulation.
Commercial Scaling and Mass Market Economics
Tesla plans to scale internal deployment to over 1,000 units before opening external commercial orders. With internal battery pack manufacturing and in-house actuator design, Tesla aims to drive the unit cost of humanoid robotics below $20,000 at volume.
